Isotopologues differ only in the number of neutrons in the atomic nuclei of a given molecule. The primary table of identified astromolecules lists the isotopologue of each compound with the most abundant isotopes: 1H, 12C, 14N, 16O, and so forth. The table on this webpage lists the identifications of rare isotopologues.
All forms of molecular spectroscopy are shifted by isotopic substitutions. Electronic transitions shift because zero-point energy contributions depend on nuclear masses. Vibrational transitions shift because force constants depend on nuclear masses. Rotational transitions shift because moment of inertia components depend on nuclear masses.
Tentative detections are italicized. Any disputed detections will be indicated with asterisks and orange text. Recently reported detections are highlighted in blue. The database NIST Recommended Rest Frequencies for Observed Interstellar Molecular Microwave Transitions is a primary resource for data and references for both common and rare isotopologues.
